Sanjaya said: This terrible and hard-to-surmount calamity has now come upon you. That very obstacle on which your sons had staked their hope of victory—indeed, the very ‘gateway’ of enmity—has been crossed by Arjuna, the son of Pandu. O King, the great, ruinous crisis you face today is precisely what you once refused to heed, even when well-wishing kinsmen spoke for your good. And, O King, though you claimed to seek the welfare of your sons who longed for the kingdom, you repeatedly acted only to harm the Pandavas; this disaster is the fruit of those deeds.

Ignoring good counsel and pursuing partisan harm in the name of one’s own side leads to self-destruction; the crisis is presented as the moral ‘fruit’ (phala) of sustained unethical choices.
Sanjaya reports to Dhritarashtra that the formidable obstacle on which the Kauravas based their hope of victory has been overcome by Arjuna, and he frames the unfolding disaster as the consequence of Dhritarashtra’s earlier refusal to heed well-wishers and his repeated actions against the Pandavas.
