Sañjaya said: “King Pāṇḍu once won a kingdom and, by his prowess, enhanced the fame of the Kauravas. After him, the Pāṇḍavas—steadfast in dharma—extended that sovereignty and good renown still further, surpassing even their father.”

The verse links legitimate sovereignty with ethical conduct: true glory (yaśas) is not merely inherited but must be expanded through dharma. The Pāṇḍavas are praised not only for political success but for surpassing their predecessor through righteous practice, implying that moral discipline is a multiplier of fame and authority.
Sañjaya, narrating to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, recalls the earlier achievements of King Pāṇḍu—who won territory and increased Kaurava prestige—and then states that the Pāṇḍavas later extended that kingdom and renown even further, emphasizing their dharma-oriented character amid the broader war narrative.
