sañjaya uvāca | "yuvābhyāṃ yad iha kāryam āgatau tad kim? ahaṃ tat sādhayiṣyāmi | ātmane kalyāṇakārīṃ vastuṃ yācethām | ahaṃ yuvābhyāṃ sarvaṃ dātuṃ śaknomi" || tataḥ tad vacanaṃ śrutvā pratyutthāya kṛtāñjalī | vāsudevārjunau śarvaṃ tuṣṭuvāte mahāmatī ||

Sanjaya said: “What is the purpose for which you two have come here? I will accomplish it. Ask for whatever will bring you welfare. I am able to grant you both everything.” Hearing these words, the blameless, great-souled and supremely wise Vasudeva (Krishna) and Arjuna rose, joined their hands in reverence, and began to praise Lord Śarva (Śiva) with a divine hymn—responding to power not with demand, but with devotion and disciplined humility.

Educational Q&A

Even when a powerful benefactor offers immediate fulfillment, the dharmic response begins with reverence and inner alignment: Krishna and Arjuna first honor Śiva through praise, showing that worthy aims should be pursued with humility, devotion, and ethical restraint rather than entitlement.

Śiva (addressed as Śarva) invites Krishna and Arjuna to state their purpose and promises to grant them boons. In response, they rise respectfully with folded hands and begin a divine hymn of praise to Śiva before making any request.
