Educational Q&A

The verse frames selfish enjoyment—consuming without rightful sharing—as a grave ethical failure with dire consequences, and it uses that moral standard to intensify Arjuna’s vow: he binds himself to a severe self-curse if he fails in his pledged duty.

After Jayadratha’s role in Abhimanyu’s death, Arjuna has sworn to kill him by the next day. Here Arjuna reiterates the vow in the strongest form, declaring that if he does not slay Jayadratha tomorrow, he deserves the dreadful fate reserved for contemptible, selfish men.
