Sañjaya said: Having withdrawn his senses from the dear and tempting objects of enjoyment, he endured hunger, thirst, and the scorching heat. Wasted and emaciated, with his veins standing out, he pressed on. Meanwhile, the warriors—eager to strike and with their forces arrayed in battle-formation—charged forward, intent on forcing their way into the ordered ranks.

The verse highlights indriya-saṃyama (restraint of the senses) and titikṣā (endurance): even amid war, a person can forcibly turn away from pleasurable impulses and bear hardship—showing how inner discipline can be mobilized for a chosen aim, whether noble or misguided.
Sañjaya describes a moment of intense pursuit and attack: warriors, arranged in battle formation, rush forward to strike and penetrate the opposing array. In the same scene, a key figure (understood here as Jayadratha from the accompanying context) is depicted as severely weakened by hunger, thirst, and heat, with veins visible, yet continuing onward.
