Sañjaya said: There, Abhimanyu shattered the enemy chariots into fragments—breaking their yokes and pole-ends, damaging even the rims and spokes of their wheels, and ruining their fittings and seats. With their equipment smashed and their parts splintered, those chariots—once orderly and splendid like a Gandharva-city—were reduced to wreckage in every direction. The scene proclaimed the terrible efficiency of martial skill when turned to destruction: magnificence and human effort, when yoked to adharma and violence, are swiftly undone on the battlefield.

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the impermanence of worldly splendor and military might: even the most well-equipped, orderly formations can be reduced to ruin in moments. It also highlights how skill and courage, though admirable, become ethically weighty when expressed through violence—inviting reflection on dharma amid war.

Sañjaya describes Abhimanyu’s battlefield prowess: he is breaking apart numerous enemy chariots, damaging their yokes, wheel-rims, spokes/structures, seats, and fittings, leaving them as wreckage scattered in all directions.
