Sañjaya said: Surely, in this world no one truly partakes of the fruit of good deeds. (He voices a bleak reflection on moral causality amid the unfolding violence, suggesting that righteousness seems unrewarded when war overturns ordinary expectations of justice.)

The verse expresses a crisis of faith in moral causality: even virtuous action (sukṛta) may appear unrewarded in the harsh realities of war, prompting reflection on how and when karmic results manifest.
Sañjaya, reporting events of the Drona Parva, utters a lament-like observation as the battle’s brutality intensifies, implying that the expected rewards of righteousness seem absent amid widespread destruction.
