Sañjaya said: The foremost among the mighty was forcibly checked at the sixth step—Bhīma, planting both feet firmly, overpowered and restrained the eminent Śini-descendant Sātyaki. The verse highlights sheer physical mastery in the midst of battle, where resolve and strength momentarily decide the course of action without any appeal to negotiation or restraint.

In the battlefield context, the verse underscores how determination and physical power can abruptly halt even a renowned warrior’s advance; it reflects the kṣatriya-world where immediate action and force often replace deliberation, raising ethical tension between restraint and aggression.
Sañjaya reports that Bhīma stands his ground, braces himself, and forcibly stops Sātyaki—described as the best among the strong—at his sixth step, effectively bringing him under control in the flow of combat.
