abravīc ca tadā bhīmaḥ pārṣataṁ śatrutāpanam |

Sañjaya said: Then Bhīma spoke to Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pārṣata (Drupada) and a tormentor of foes: “O son of Drupada! When Karṇa, the charioteer’s son, and the sinful Duryodhana are slain, then I shall embrace you again upon my chest in the same victorious manner.” The utterance frames Bhīma’s fierce vow as a moralized war-aim: victory is envisioned not as mere conquest, but as the removal of those he deems unrighteous aggressors, after which fraternal honor and recognition are to be publicly affirmed.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a warrior’s ethic where victory is tied to a moral assessment of opponents: Bhīma frames the killing of Karṇa and Duryodhana as the removal of perceived adharma, and promises public honor (an embrace) to the ally who shares that righteous victory.

Sañjaya reports Bhīma addressing Dhṛṣṭadyumna, encouraging him with a pledge: once Karṇa and Duryodhana fall, Bhīma will embrace Dhṛṣṭadyumna again in celebration of their triumph, reaffirming alliance and shared purpose in the war.
