Sanjaya said: Striving with affectionate regard, and smiling, he checked Arjuna’s advance. Though restrained in this manner by Arjuna in the thick of the fight, the great-souled hero Droṇācārya, exerting himself and smiling with calm satisfaction, began in turn to hold Arjuna back from pressing forward. The scene underscores a warrior’s discipline: even amid lethal conflict, mastery of self and respect for a worthy opponent can coexist with relentless duty on the battlefield.

Educational Q&A

Even in violent conflict, a disciplined warrior can act without hatred: effort is joined with composure, and a worthy opponent—especially within a teacher-disciple bond—may be met with respect while still fulfilling one’s duty.

In the midst of battle, Arjuna attempts to restrain Droṇa; Droṇa, smiling and exerting himself, reciprocally checks Arjuna’s advance, showing a tense close-quarters contest marked by mutual prowess and controlled emotion.
