Sañjaya said: The battlefield shone in many places, lit up by severed arms, by variegated coats of mail, by heads adorned with beautiful earrings, and by other scattered implements of war—an austere spectacle that underscores the terrible cost of unrighteous fury and the moral weight borne by all who choose violence.

Educational Q&A

The verse offers a stark ethical reminder: war’s outward ‘splendor’ is actually the grim visibility of dismemberment and ruin. By describing the field as ‘shining’ with severed limbs and gear, it exposes the moral cost of anger and adharma, urging reflection on responsibility and restraint.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the battlefield is strewn with cut-off arms, ornate armor, heads with earrings, and other weapons and equipment scattered about, making different parts of the field appear conspicuous and dreadful.
