ततः: सर्वाणि सैन्यानि सेनागोपाश्ष भारत । व्यमुहन्त रणे तत्र तमसा संवृते सति
tataḥ sarvāṇi sainyāni senāgopāś ca bhārata | vyamuhanta raṇe tatra tamasā saṃvṛte sati ||
Sañjaya said: Then, O Bhārata, all the armies and their commanders rearranged themselves into battle-formations there on the field, as darkness had spread over everything. In that obscurity, strategy and survival took precedence, and the warriors’ duty to their side expressed itself through rapid, disciplined re-ordering amid confusion.
संजय उवाच
Even amid darkness and confusion, collective duty (svadharma) in war is shown through discipline, leadership, and coordinated action; the verse highlights how order is deliberately restored when conditions threaten to dissolve it.
As darkness covers the battlefield, all forces—along with their commanders—rearrange themselves into new battle formations, indicating a tactical reset in response to reduced visibility and heightened uncertainty.
