tadanantaraṁ tatra sa kauravāṇāṁ mahāsaṁhārasya tat sarvaṁ samācāraṁ jagāda; etad api nyavedayat—śatravaḥ vijayino bhavanti, mahārājasya dhṛtarāṣṭrasya sarve putrā vipatti-samudre nimajjanti.

Thereafter, in that very place, he reported in full the tidings of the great slaughter of the Kauravas. He also made it known that the enemy was gaining victory, and that all the sons of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra were sinking into an ocean of calamity—an image that underscores how adharma-driven ambition culminates in collective ruin.

Educational Q&A

The verse frames the war’s outcome as a moral and political consequence: when power is pursued through adharma, the result is not merely defeat but an engulfing calamity that consumes an entire lineage—symbolized by ‘sinking in an ocean of disaster.’

Sañjaya continues his battlefield report to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, conveying comprehensive news of the Kauravas’ heavy losses and stating that the opposing side is prevailing, while Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons are being overwhelmed by misfortune.
