Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical weight of honor and loyalty in a warrior culture: carrying out a superior’s command and remaining steadfast can be praised as ‘gaurava’ (a binding sense of honor). At the same time, it implicitly raises the Mahābhārata’s recurring tension between obedience to authority and the larger demands of dharma.

Sañjaya speaks to two unnamed heroes, praising them for obeying his instruction and expressing relief that they have safely come through the perilous mass of troops—likened to an ‘ocean’—and are now visible to him alive.
