(Alaṃbala-vadhaḥ) / The Slaying of Alaṃbala and the Advance toward Karṇa

asmāddhi kurumukhyānāṁ mahad utpatsyate bhasma

Sañjaya said: “From this (Duryodhana), a great ruin—like ashes—will arise for the foremost of the Kurus.” The verse evokes Vidura’s earlier warning to Dhṛtarāṣṭra: that Duryodhana’s very birth portended destruction for the Kuru elders and leaders. Now, as the war’s consequences unfold, that truthful counsel is seen to have become reality—an ethical lament on how adharma in one heir can consume an entire lineage.

Educational Q&A

Unchecked adharma in a single powerful individual—especially an heir—can bring collective catastrophe. Wise counsel (like Vidura’s) is meant to prevent such lineage-wide ruin, but ignoring it turns warning into destiny.

Sañjaya reflects on the war’s devastating outcomes and recalls (through the surrounding context) Vidura’s earlier prediction that Duryodhana would become the source of great destruction for the leading Kurus—now being fulfilled amid the carnage of the Drona Parva.
