Droṇa Encircled at Night: Coalition Advance and Battlefield Omens (द्रोणपर्यावरणं रात्रियुद्धवर्णनम्)

athānyair aviśikhaiḥ tīrṇaiḥ saṅkruddhaḥ kuṇḍabhedinam | suṣeṇaṃ dīrghanetraṃ ca tribhis trīn avadhīd balī ||

Sañjaya said: Then the mighty Bhīma, inflamed with fierce anger, struck down with three other sharp arrows—one each—Kuṇḍabhedin, Suṣeṇa, and Dīrghanetra. In the grim momentum of battle, his wrath becomes lethal efficiency, and the episode underscores how rage and duty-driven violence can rapidly consume even royal heirs on the battlefield.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the moral tension of war: even when action aligns with a warrior’s duty, uncontrolled anger accelerates destruction and makes the battlefield a place where lineage and status offer no protection. It invites reflection on how dharma in war can be overshadowed by krodha (wrath), turning duty into ruthless annihilation.

Sañjaya reports that Bhīma, in intense fury, uses three sharp arrows to kill three opponents—Kuṇḍabhedin, Suṣeṇa, and Dīrghanetra—identified in the given context as sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra fighting on the Kaurava side.
