तान् द्रोण: प्रतिजग्राह परीप्सन् युधि पाण्डवम्
tān droṇaḥ pratijagrāha parīpsan yudhi pāṇḍavam
Sañjaya said: Seeking to seize the Pāṇḍava in the midst of battle, Droṇa accepted that challenge and moved to engage them. The line underscores Droṇa’s strategic intent in war—capturing or overpowering the opponent—while also hinting at the moral tension of a revered teacher pursuing his former disciples on the battlefield.

Even in righteous duty (kṣatriya warfare), intention matters: the verse highlights purposeful action—Droṇa’s deliberate aim to seize the opponent—while inviting reflection on the ethical strain when personal relationships (teacher and disciples) are subordinated to wartime obligations.
Sañjaya reports that Droṇa, intent on taking the Pāṇḍava(s) in combat, accepts the engagement and advances to confront them on the battlefield.
