Sañjaya said: Arrayed in their respective divisions, the chariot-warriors, the foot-soldiers, the elephant-riders, and the horsemen advanced—each following the other in ordered succession. The movement reflects disciplined coordination in war, where duty is carried out through structure and obedience rather than impulsive violence.

Educational Q&A

Even in warfare, action is expected to be governed by order, discipline, and assigned duty (yathābhāgam). The verse highlights coordinated conduct rather than chaotic aggression, implying that responsibility and structure shape ethical action in a grave context.

Sañjaya describes the troops beginning to move forward in formation: chariot-warriors, infantry, elephant units, and cavalry proceed in their respective divisions, following one another as the battle lines advance.
