Sañjaya said: Then there arose a dreadful battle between the Pāṇḍavas and the Kauravas—like the war of the gods against the Dānavas. In that clash, the Pāṇḍavas, longing for victory and for a wondrous, far-reaching fame, pressed into the fight with fierce resolve, as the contest turned into a trial of valor and rightful claim amid the ruinous demands of war.

Educational Q&A

The verse frames the Kurukṣetra conflict as a cosmic-scale struggle (Devas vs Dānavas), highlighting how the pursuit of victory and fame intensifies warfare; it implicitly invites reflection on dharma—how rightful aims are tested and morally burdened amid violent means.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that a terrifying battle has erupted between the Pāṇḍavas and Kauravas, comparing its ferocity to the mythic wars between gods and Dānavas, and noting the Pāṇḍavas’ desire for victory and extraordinary renown.
