Arjuna’s Advance toward Bhīṣma; The Gāṇḍīva’s Signal and the Armies’ Convergence (भीष्माभिमुखगमनम् — गाण्डीवनिर्घोष-ध्वजवर्णनम्)
बलवीर्यसमाविष्ट: ससहायश्च साम्प्रतम् । “मुझे इस समय दुरात्मा घटोत्कचके साथ युद्ध करना अच्छा नहीं लगता; क्योंकि वह बल और पराक्रमसे सम्पन्न है और इस समय उसे प्रबल सहायक भी मिल गये हैं ।। ७४ # || नैष शक््यो युधा जेतुमपि वज्रभूता स्वयम्,'ऐसी दशामें साक्षात् वज्रधारी इन्द्र भी उसे युद्धमें पराजित नहीं कर सकते। यह प्रहार करनेमें कुशल तथा लक्ष्य भेदनेमें सफल है। इधर हमलोगोंके वाहन थक गये हैं। पाण्डवों और पांचालोंके द्वारा दिनभर क्षत-विक्षत होते रहे हैं
sañjaya uvāca | balavīryasamāviṣṭaḥ sasahāyaś ca sāmpratam |
Sanjaya said: “He is now possessed of great strength and valor, and at present he is also supported by powerful allies.” In the ethical atmosphere of the war narrative, this line underscores a sober assessment of force and circumstance—recognizing that prowess, when reinforced by timely support, can make a foe effectively unassailable in direct combat, and that prudence (not mere bravado) must guide action on the battlefield.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights strategic discernment: a warrior should realistically evaluate an opponent’s strength and current support. In dharmic terms, courage is not recklessness; right action in war includes prudent judgment about timing, allies, and feasibility.
Sanjaya reports to Dhritarashtra that a particular combatant is presently empowered by great strength and valor and is additionally backed by strong allies, implying that confronting him directly at this moment would be especially difficult.
