Adhyāya 6: Pañca-mahābhūta–guṇa-nirdeśa and Sudarśana-dvīpa

Five Elements, Sensory Qualities, and a Cosmographic Island

tatra brahmā ca rudraś ca śakraś cāpi sureśvaraḥ | sametya vividhair yajñair yajante ’nekadakṣiṇaiḥ ||

There, Brahmā and Rudra, and also Śakra—the lord of the gods—assemble together and perform many kinds of sacrifices, richly endowed with abundant sacrificial gifts. The scene underscores the cosmic order upheld through yajña and generosity, even as the larger narrative moves toward the upheaval of war.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights yajña and dakṣiṇā (generous giving) as supports of dharma: even the highest divine powers are portrayed as upholding order through disciplined ritual action and munificence.

Sañjaya describes a scene where Brahmā, Rudra, and Indra gather and conduct diverse sacrifices with plentiful gifts, presenting a sacred, orderly backdrop within the Bhīṣma Parva’s wider movement toward the Kurukṣetra conflict.
