Speech-discipline is called austerity when one’s words do not agitate others, are truthful, pleasing, and beneficial; and when one practices recitation and study of sacred texts. Mental austerity is said to be the serenity of mind, gentleness, inner silence, self-restraint, and the thorough purification of one’s inner dispositions. In the ethical setting of the battlefield teaching, these disciplines define strength not as harshness but as mastery of speech and mind aligned with truth and welfare.

True austerity includes ethical speech and mental discipline: speak in ways that are truthful, non-agitating, pleasant, and beneficial, and cultivate sacred study; internally, maintain serenity, gentleness, silence/restraint, self-control, and purity of intention.
Within the Mahābhārata’s Bhīṣma Parva, Krishna instructs Arjuna on yogic and ethical disciplines amid the impending war, redefining strength as inner mastery—especially of speech and mind—rather than mere outward force.
