Puruṣottama-yoga

The Discipline of the Supreme Person) — Chapter 15 (Bhagavadgītā

sañjaya uvāca | etac chrutvā vacanaṁ keśavasya kṛtāñjalir vepamānaḥ kirīṭī | namaskṛtvā bhūya evāha kṛṣṇaṁ sa-gadgadaṁ bhīta-bhītaḥ praṇamya ||

Sañjaya said: Having heard these words of Keśava, the diademed Arjuna, with palms joined, trembling, bowed in reverence. Then, bowing again—overwhelmed with fear and awe—he addressed Kṛṣṇa in a voice choked with emotion. The scene underscores the ethical weight of divine instruction: true understanding is not merely intellectual but shakes the whole person, drawing the listener into humility and surrender before dharma.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the proper ethical-religious response to divine instruction: humility, reverence, and inner transformation. Arjuna’s trembling and choked voice show that encountering truth about dharma and the divine is existentially powerful, moving one beyond debate into surrender and readiness to act rightly.

Sañjaya narrates Arjuna’s reaction after hearing Keśava’s words (in the wake of the overwhelming revelation and instruction). Arjuna, the crowned warrior, folds his hands, trembles, repeatedly bows, and then begins to speak to Kṛṣṇa with an emotion-thickened voice—signaling awe, fear, and devotion before continuing the dialogue.
