Let a person lift oneself up by one’s own self; one should not degrade oneself. For the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is the enemy of the self. In the midst of the war-setting, the teaching turns inward: ethical strength and spiritual progress depend on self-discipline, not self-sabotage, and one’s inner disposition becomes either support or obstruction on the path to the highest good.

Personal uplift is achieved through one’s own inner effort and discipline; the same inner self (mind and character) can function as an ally when mastered or as an enemy when uncontrolled.
Within the Kurukṣetra dialogue, the instruction shifts from external circumstances to inner responsibility: regardless of the battlefield situation, one must cultivate resolve and self-mastery to progress toward the highest goal.
