Sanjaya said: O King, in that battle Arjuna covered the great chariot-warrior Shalya—who was striving for victory—with a dense shower of arrows whose joints were bent, overwhelming him on the field. The scene underscores the relentless intensity of righteous warfare, where prowess and discipline decide the moment-to-moment course of combat.

The verse highlights kshatriya-dharma in practice: disciplined effort (yatna) and mastery of skill determine effectiveness in battle. Ethically, it reflects the epic’s view that even amid violence, action is judged by duty, restraint, and rightful alignment rather than mere aggression.
Sanjaya reports to the king that Arjuna, on the battlefield, overwhelms Shalya by covering him with a heavy volley of arrows, momentarily dominating the encounter and demonstrating superior archery.
