Bhīmasena’s Engagement with Multiple Mahārathas
जघानात्र पिता पुत्रं पुत्रश्न पितरं तथा
jaghānātra pitā putraṃ putraś ca pitaraṃ tathā
Sañjaya said: Here, a father struck down his own son, and likewise a son struck down his father—showing how, in the blindness of war, kinship and natural affection were overrun by the demands of battle and allegiance.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the moral collapse that war can produce: even the most fundamental bonds—father and son—can be violated when violence and factional duty eclipse compassion and familial dharma.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra the battlefield horror that, in the fighting, fathers and sons ended up killing each other, emphasizing the chaos and indiscriminate nature of the conflict.
