Sanjaya said: Then your father’s elder, Devavrata (Bhishma), angered, struck the sons of Pritha—along with their troops—on every side in the battle, with sharp and excellent arrows. The scene underscores Bhishma’s formidable martial duty as a commander, even as it intensifies the moral tension of elders fighting kin in a war driven by contested righteousness.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the harsh reality of kshatriya warfare: even revered elders like Bhishma, bound by role and allegiance, can become instruments of intense violence. It invites reflection on how anger and duty operate within dharma, and how moral complexity deepens when family ties are set against political obligation.

Sanjaya reports to Dhritarashtra that Bhishma, provoked, launches a powerful assault, striking the Pandavas and their forces from all directions with excellent, sharp arrows—setting the stage for the Pandava army’s distress and the urgent search for a way to neutralize Bhishma.
