Adhyāya 90: Babhruvāhana’s Reception and the Commencement of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Aśvamedha

nyāyalabdhair yathā sūkṣmaiḥ śraddhāpūtaiḥ sa tuṣyati | tāta! anyāyapūrvaka-prāptena dravyeṇa mahān phala-dāyakāni bṛhad-bṛhad dānāni kṛtvāpi dharmaḥ tāvat na prasīdati, yāvat nyāyopārjita-alpasya annasyāpi śraddhayā dānena prasīdati ||

The father-in-law said: “My son, Dharma is truly pleased not by grand gifts that promise great merit when they are made from wealth obtained unjustly, but by even a small offering of food honestly earned and given with sincere faith. The purity of means and the giver’s reverence outweigh the size of the donation.”

Educational Q&A

Dharma values the purity of acquisition and the sincerity of faith over the magnitude of the gift: a small, honestly earned offering given with śraddhā surpasses lavish charity funded by unjust wealth.

A father-in-law (śvaśura) instructs the addressed ‘son’ (tāta), emphasizing ethical conduct in giving—warning that impressive donations do not compensate for wrongful means, while modest, rightful giving truly pleases Dharma.
