Marutta’s Sacrifice and Agni’s Embassy

indra uvāca—sarvān kāmān anuyāto ’si, vipra; yas tvaṃ devānāṃ mantravit supurodhāḥ | ubhau ca te jarāmṛtyū vyatītau; kiṃ saṃvartas tava kartādya, vipra ||

Indra said: “O Brahmin, you have attained every desired enjoyment, for you are the gods’ learned priest, a knower of sacred mantras. You have even transcended both old age and death. What, then, can Saṃvarta do to you now, O Brahmin?”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the esteem given to mantra-knowledge and priestly spiritual authority: one who has attained fulfillment and transcended aging and death is portrayed as beyond ordinary threats, making worldly opposition seem powerless.

Indra addresses a Brahmin figure, praising his status as the gods’ mantra-knowing priest and asserting that he has overcome old age and death; therefore Indra questions what Saṃvarta could possibly do against him now.
