Marutta’s Sacrifice and Agni’s Embassy

yady āgaccheḥ punar evaṁ kathaṁcid bṛhaspatiṁ paridātuṁ marutte | daheyaṁ tvāṁ cakṣuṣā dāruṇena saṅkruddha ity etad avaihi śakra ||

Vyāsa said: “If you should come again in any way to deliver Bṛhaspati to Marutta, then—so he declared—‘I, enraged, will burn you with my terrible gaze.’ Know this well, O Śakra (Indra).” The passage underscores the gravity of a brahmacārin’s wrath when dharma is perceived to be violated, and it cautions even the gods to respect ascetic power and the boundaries set by righteous discipline.

Educational Q&A

Even gods must heed the moral and spiritual authority born of brahmacarya and tapas. When a disciplined ascetic sets a boundary in the name of dharma, violating it invites severe consequences; power must be tempered by respect for righteousness.

Vyāsa reports a warning: if Agni (or the addressed party) again tries to bring Bṛhaspati to King Marutta, the brahmacārin Saṁvarta—angered—will burn him with a fierce gaze. Vyāsa urges Indra (Śakra) to understand the seriousness of this threat.
