Vāyudeva said: “Forbearance, steadfastness, non-violence, even-mindedness, truthfulness, straightforwardness, knowledge, generosity, and renunciation—these are held to be the conduct of sattva.” In this teaching context, the god of wind enumerates the inner virtues and disciplined way of life that define a pure, dharmic character beyond mere ritual or outward display.
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse defines sāttvika (pure, clarity-based) conduct as a set of inner virtues—patience, firmness, non-violence, equanimity, truth, sincerity, wisdom, generosity, and renunciation—presenting dharma primarily as character and disciplined disposition rather than mere external observance.
Within the Ashvamedhika Parva’s instructional discourse, Vāyudeva speaks as an authority figure and enumerates the qualities that mark an elevated, sattva-dominant way of life, guiding the listener toward ethical self-cultivation after the war’s upheaval.
