Adhvaryu–Yati Dialogue on Svabhāva, Ahiṃsā, and Mokṣa

arthāniṣṭān kāmayate svabhāvaḥ sarvān deṣyān praddhiṣate svabhāvaḥ | kāmadveṣāyuddhavataḥ svabhāvāt prāṇāpānau jantudehān niveśya |

The Brāhmaṇa said: It is one’s very nature that longs for what is desired, and it is one’s very nature that recoils from all that is hateful. Just as prāṇa and apāna, entering the bodies of living beings by their own inherent function, continually carry on processes such as digestion, so too—by nature itself—attachment and aversion arise. The point is that the faculties such as the intellect and the senses, driven by their inborn disposition, keep engaging with objects.
