Adhvaryu–Yati Dialogue on Svabhāva, Ahiṃsā, and Mokṣa
ahiṁsā sarvabhūtānāṁ nityam asmāsu rocate | pratyakṣataḥ sādhayāmo na parokṣam upāsmahe ||
The Brahmin said: “Non-violence toward all beings is always pleasing to us. We pursue what yields results that are directly evident; we do not engage in the worship or pursuit of what is indirect and unseen.”
ब्राह्मण उवाच
The verse upholds ahiṁsā (non-violence) as a consistently valued dharmic principle and adds a practical stance: the speaker prefers disciplines whose fruits are directly observable (pratyakṣa) rather than relying on indirect or unseen outcomes (parokṣa).
A Brahmin speaker states his community’s ethical preference for non-harming all beings and frames their religious/practical orientation as focused on direct, evident results rather than indirect, unseen forms of worship or pursuit.
