śaunaka uvāca — teṣu tatropaviṣṭeṣu brāhmaṇeṣu mahātmasu | ruruḥ śukrośa gahanaṁ vanaṁ gatvātiduḥkhitaḥ ||

Śaunaka said: While those great-souled brāhmaṇas were seated there around Pramadvarā, Ruru—overwhelmed by grief—went into a dense forest and cried out loudly. The scene frames sorrow not as mere emotion but as a moral crisis: the death (or seeming death) of the beloved tests restraint, duty, and the direction in which one’s suffering will be turned—toward wisdom or toward vengeance.

Educational Q&A

Grief is acknowledged as natural, yet the narrative sets up an ethical choice: whether suffering will mature into discernment and compassion or harden into indiscriminate anger (later expressed as hostility toward snakes).

After the brāhmaṇas sit around Pramadvarā, Ruru—stricken with sorrow—goes into a dense forest and wails loudly, beginning his lament over her condition.
