Then Indra addressed Puruṣottama (the Supreme Person), saying, “Lord, for the cleansing of the earth—removing her oppressive burden—please descend by a portion of Yourself.” Hari (Viṣṇu), accepting the request for the restoration of cosmic order, replied, “So be it.”
वैशग्पायन उवाच
When disorder and oppression weigh upon the world, restoration of dharma may require divinely guided action; the divine responds to a legitimate plea aimed at protecting the earth and re-establishing balance.
Indra approaches Puruṣottama (Hari/Viṣṇu) and requests that he descend in a partial incarnation to cleanse the earth of its burden; Hari consents with “tathā (tathāstu),” accepting the mission.
