Arjuna’s Pilgrimage and the Maṇalūra Alliance
Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca—Sundopasundāv asurau kasya putrau mahāmune? utpannas tu kathaṃ bhedaḥ, kathaṃ cānyonyam aghnatām?
Yudhiṣṭhira said: “O great sage, whose sons were the two Asuras Sunda and Upasunda? How did discord arise between them, and how did they come to slay one another?”
The verse frames an ethical inquiry into how inner division (bheda) can arise even among powerful allies or kin, leading to mutual ruin—hinting that unchecked desire and rivalry are self-destructive.
Yudhiṣṭhira asks a sage (in this section, Nārada is the narrator) about the lineage of the Asura brothers Sunda and Upasunda and requests the cause and sequence of events that led them to turn against and kill each other.
