Drupada said: “O great seer, because I had not heard your counsel earlier, I previously strove to arrange matters otherwise—seeking to give her to a single suitable husband. But what the Ordainer has already set in place cannot be turned aside. Therefore, it is fitting to follow this very arrangement that has now come to pass, in accordance with the prior decree of destiny.”

Educational Q&A

Human planning has limits; when a course is understood as divinely or fatefully ordained (vihita), resisting it is portrayed as futile and ethically inappropriate. Drupada frames acceptance of the established outcome as the dharmic response, especially when guided by a seer’s counsel.

In the context of Draupadī’s marriage, Drupada addresses a great seer and admits he earlier tried to arrange her marriage differently (to one husband). He now concedes that the ordained dispensation cannot be averted and agrees to proceed with the arrangement that has manifested—Draupadī’s marriage in the manner being established.
