vaiśampāyana uvāca | hiḍimbā tu tataḥ kuntīm abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ | yudhiṣṭhiraṃ tu kaunteyam idaṃ vacanam abravīt |
Vaiśampāyana said: Then Hiḍimbā, with palms joined in reverence, bowed to Kuntī and addressed Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, speaking these words. The scene underscores proper conduct—respectful salutation and humble speech—before one makes a request or offers counsel to elders and the righteous.
The verse highlights dhārmic decorum: before speaking—especially to elders or the righteous—one should approach with humility, offer respectful salutations, and speak with restraint. The gesture of kṛtāñjali and abhivādana frames speech as ethically grounded.
After the preceding events, Hiḍimbā approaches the Pāṇḍava family, respectfully salutes Kuntī, and then addresses Yudhiṣṭhira (as Kaunteya), introducing the words she is about to say in the next verses.
