Vaiśampāyana said: While the Pāṇḍavas, together with Kuntī, lay resting there, a rākṣasa named Hiḍimba lived not far from that forest, taking shelter by a śāla tree. The scene quietly sets the moral tension to come: the vulnerable are at rest, and a predatory force lurks nearby, foreshadowing a test of protection and righteous strength.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames a dharmic contrast: the righteous rest in vulnerability, while a predatory being waits nearby. It prepares the ethical necessity of protection—strength must awaken to defend those who cannot defend themselves.
As the Pāṇḍavas and Kuntī sleep, the rākṣasa Hiḍimba is introduced as living close by, sheltering near a śāla tree. This introduction sets up the imminent encounter that will lead into the Hiḍimba episode.
