Vaiśampāyana said: “They were fleeing, wailing, and crying out as they ran toward the Pāṇḍavas. Karṇa—his body torn by the arrows of the Pāñcālas—was seized by fear; he leapt down from his chariot and became intent on flight. The Pāṇḍavas, hearing the hair-raising cries of the wounded and distressed, responded at once.”

Educational Q&A

Even renowned warriors can be overtaken by fear when circumstances turn dire; the verse highlights the human cost of war through the cries of the wounded and the moral pressure such suffering places on leaders and fighters.

In the midst of a fierce clash, troops run toward the Pāṇḍavas crying out; Karṇa, badly wounded by Pāñcāla arrows, jumps from his chariot and flees. The Pāṇḍavas hear the terrifying lament of the afflicted and prepare to act.
