Vaiśampāyana said: Surrounded by the five brothers, Droṇa—teacher of the sons of Pṛthā—shone forth, like the moon joined with the five-star asterism Hasta under the presiding Savitṛ. The image underscores how the presence of disciplined, duty-bound disciples can magnify a teacher’s dignity and radiance, reflecting the ethical ideal of reverence to one’s preceptor and solidarity among brothers.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical ideal that a teacher’s honor and brilliance are enhanced by worthy, united disciples; it implicitly commends reverence to the guru and fraternal solidarity as supports of dharma.

Vaiśampāyana describes Droṇa appearing splendid while encircled by the five sons of Kuntī (the Pāṇḍavas), using an astronomical simile: the moon shining when associated with the five-star Hasta asterism under Savitṛ’s influence.
