ततः स वारुणास्त्रेण पूरयित्वा कमण्डलुम् । सममाचार्यपुत्रेण गुरुम भ्येति फाल्गुन:,अतः वे वारुणास्त्रसे तुरंत ही अपना कमण्डलु भरकर आचार्यपुत्रके साथ ही गुरुके समीप आ जाते थे, इसलिये आचार्यपुत्रसे किसी भी गुणकी वृद्धिमें वे अलग या पीछे न रहे। यही कारण था कि मेधावी अर्जुन अश्व॒त्थामासे किसी बातमें कम न रहे। वे अस्त्रवेत्ताओंमें सबसे श्रेष्ठ थे। अर्जुन अपने गुरुदेवकी सेवा-पूजाके लिये भी उत्तम यत्न करते थे। अस्त्रोंके अभ्यासमें भी उनकी अच्छी लगन थी। इसीलिये वे ट्रोणाचार्यके बड़े प्रिय हो गये
tataḥ sa vāruṇāstreṇa pūrayitvā kamaṇḍalum | samam ācāryaputreṇa gurum abhyeti phālgunaḥ ||
Then Phālguna (Arjuna), using the Varuṇa-weapon, filled his water-pot and went at once to his teacher, keeping pace with the teacher’s son. Thus he did not fall behind the ācārya’s son in any accomplishment or increase of skill. This is why the intelligent Arjuna was in no way inferior to Aśvatthāmā: he became foremost among those who knew weapons, and through diligent service and reverence toward his guru, along with steady practice, he grew especially dear to Droṇa.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Excellence in learning is sustained by disciplined effort and respectful service to one’s teacher; by matching the diligence of a privileged peer (the teacher’s son), Arjuna ensures he is not left behind and becomes especially dear to his guru.
Arjuna uses the Varuṇa-weapon to obtain water quickly, fills his kamaṇḍalu, and returns to Droṇa alongside the teacher’s son, so that he remains equal in performance and progress, ultimately earning distinction and the teacher’s affection.
