tatrājagāma vighneśo vedavyāso yataḥ sthitaḥ | pūjitaś copaviṣṭaś ca vyāsenoktas tadā anagha śaunaka |
Then Vighneśa (Gaṇeśa) came to the place where Vedavyāsa was seated. Having been duly honored, he sat down; and then Vyāsa addressed him. O blameless Śaunaka, this marks the beginning of the sacred collaboration in which reverence, humility, and right intention remove obstacles to a great work meant for the welfare of the world.
Before undertaking a vast and consequential task, one should begin with proper reverence and right intention—honoring the divine and the learned—so that obstacles are removed and the work serves dharma and the good of many.
Vyāsa summons Vighneśa (Gaṇeśa). Gaṇeśa arrives where Vyāsa is present, is respectfully received, sits down, and Vyāsa then begins to speak to him—setting up Gaṇeśa’s role as the scribe for the Mahābhārata.
