Mantras

Mantra 1

अयमु त्वा विचर्षणे जनीरिवाभि संवृतः । प्र सोम इन्द्र सर्पतु

This Soma, verily, O wide-seeing Indra, hath wrapped thee round as a woman doth embrace: forth let the Soma, O Indra, glide within.

Mantra 2

तुविग्रीवो वपोदरः सुबाहुरन्धसो मदे । इन्द्रो वृत्राणि जिघ्नते

Mighty-necked, full-bellied, strong-armed—when in the rapture of the Soma-juice—Indra smiteth down the Vṛtras, the obstructing foes.

Mantra 3

इन्द्र प्रेहि पुरस्त्वं विश्वस्येशान ओजसा ।वृत्राणि वृत्रहं जहि

Indra, go forth before us—thou lord of all by might: smite down the Vṛtras, O Vṛtra-slayer, strike them dead.

Mantra 4

दीर्घस्ते अस्त्वङ्कुशो येना वसु प्रयच्छसि । यजमानाय सुन्वते

Long be thy goad wherewith thou bestowest wealth, unto the sacrificer, unto him that presseth Soma.

Mantra 5

अयं त इन्द्र सोमो निपूतो अधि बर्हिषि । एहीमस्य द्रवा पिब

This Soma, O Indra, for thee—well purified—lies upon the sacred grass. Come hither; run to it; drink thereof.

Mantra 6

शाचिगो शाचिपूजनायं रणाय ते सुतः। आखण्डल प्र हूयसे

O lord of might, O thou whom might exalts, this pressed draught is thine for battle: O Unbroken One, thou art called aloud.

Mantra 7

यस्ते शृङ्गवृषो नपात् प्रणपात् कुण्डपाय्यः । न्यस्मिन्दध्र आ मनः

That horned Bull—thy offspring, thy mightier offspring, the bowl-drinker—hath set his mind down upon this (man).

Frequently Asked Questions

For invigoration and royal-heroic success—strengthening courage and dominance, winning contests, and drawing prosperity to the Soma-presser through Indra’s favor.

Because Soma is treated as the activating instrument: it ‘enters’ and empowers Indra, and that energized Indra then grants victory and wealth to the patron.

It is a metaphor of compulsion and direction—Indra’s power to drive outcomes (especially wealth and success) toward the sacrificer who performs Soma-pressing and praise.
