FAQs

It is a euphemistic dharma-term for generating progeny within lawful marriage and sustaining lineage. The ‘auspiciousness’ implies conformity to dharma (saṃskāras, household rites, and ethical life).

The verse is a normative Purāṇic praise (mahātmyā-style) of putra-dharma: it highlights a powerful remedial pathway, typically understood alongside righteous conduct, prescribed rites, and devotion—rather than as a license for wrongdoing.

Puṃnāma is traditionally linked with the salvific role of the ‘putra’ (often explained etymologically as ‘one who rescues from Puṃnāma’). The verse reinforces that cultural-theological motif by stating the hell is ‘destroyed entirely’ through dharmic progeny and divine pleasure.
