Adhyaya 22 — Kuvalayashva’s Death through Daitya-Deceit and Madalasa’s Self-Immolation
संग्रामे युध्यमाना येऽभीता गोद्विजरक्षणे ।
क्षुण्णाः शस्त्रैर्विपद्यन्ते त एव भुवि मानवाः ॥
saṃgrāme yudhyamānā ye 'bhītā godvijarakṣaṇe | kṣuṇṇāḥ śastrair vipadyante ta eva bhuvi mānavāḥ ||
Mereka yang tanpa takut bertempur di medan perang demi melindungi sapi dan para brāhmaṇa, lalu gugur—tertebas senjata—merekalah saja yang sungguh disebut laki-laki di bumi.

Human dignity is tied to dharmic courage: risking one’s life to protect the vulnerable and uphold sacred social supports (cows and brāhmaṇas as symbols of sustenance and Vedic learning).

‘Go’ can signify prāṇa and nourishing virtue; ‘dvija’ can signify higher knowledge. The fearless warrior represents the disciplined will that protects life-force and insight against the ‘weapons’ of inner disorder.
