Educational Q&A

The verse highlights ethical kingship: authority should be conferred through legitimate rites (abhiṣeka) upon one perceived as virtuous and capable. It also underscores the social duty of honoring merit and the moral weight of recognizing dharma even when a person’s true identity is concealed.

In the Virāṭa court episode, King Virāṭa—pleased with Kaṅka (actually Yudhiṣṭhira in disguise)—impulsively proposes to anoint him as the ruler of Matsya, offering sovereignty and formal coronation.
