Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 71 — Kṣatra-dharma Counsel, Public Legitimacy, and Mobilization

अत: हमलोग न तो राज्य त्यागना चाहते हैं और न कुलके विनाशकी ही इच्छा रखते हैं। यदि नग्रता दिखानेसे भी शान्ति हो जाय तो वही सबसे बढ़कर है ।।

ataḥ vayaṁ na rājyatyāgaṁ icchāmaḥ na ca kulavināśam eva. yadi namratādarśanena api śāntiḥ syāt tad eva sarvottamam. sarvathā yatamānānām ayuddham abhikāṅkṣatām, sāntve pratihate yuddhaṁ prasiddhaṁ nāparākramaḥ.

Yudhiṣṭhira berkata: “Karena itu kami tidak ingin melepaskan kerajaan, dan kami pun tidak menghendaki musnahnya garis keturunan kami. Jika damai dapat diraih bahkan dengan menunjukkan kerendahan hati, itulah jalan tertinggi. Kami berusaha dengan segala cara, mendambakan agar perang tidak terjadi; dengan sāma, dāna, dan bheda kami menempuh upaya untuk memperoleh kerajaan. Namun bila jalan pendamaian ditolak, maka perang menjadi kewajiban yang diakui—tak seorang pun dapat duduk diam dengan menanggalkan keberanian dan tanggung jawab.”

Peace is the highest aim when it can be achieved without surrendering rightful duty; yet for a kṣatriya, if sincere conciliation is rejected and injustice persists, taking up war becomes a recognized obligation rather than a choice of aggression.
