उद्योगपर्व — अध्याय 33: धृतराष्ट्र-विदुर संवादः (विदुरनीतिः)
अनुबन्ध॑ च सम्प्रेक्ष्य विपाकं॑ चैव कर्मणाम् । उत्थानमात्मनश्वैव धीर: कुर्वीत वा न वा,धीर मनुष्यको उचित है कि पहले कर्मोंका प्रयोजन, परिणाम तथा अपनी उन्नतिका विचार करके फिर काम आरम्भ करे या न करे
anubandhaṁ ca samprekṣya vipākaṁ caiva karmaṇām | utthānam ātmanaś caiva dhīraḥ kurvīta vā na vā ||
Orang yang bijak hendaknya terlebih dahulu menelaah keterkaitan suatu tindakan, kematangan buah perbuatan, serta kemampuan dirinya untuk bangkit dan maju; barulah ia memutuskan akan melakukannya atau menahan diri.
विदुर उवाच
Before acting, the wise evaluate (1) the aim and downstream consequences (anubandha), (2) the eventual fruition of karma (vipāka), and (3) their own capacity and uplift through effort (utthāna). Action is ethical when it is chosen through clear foresight rather than impulse.
In Udyoga Parva, Vidura offers counsel grounded in dharma and practical wisdom. Here he advises careful assessment of consequences and personal capability as the basis for deciding whether to undertake a course of action—an apt warning amid the tense deliberations preceding the Kurukṣetra war.
