Sañjaya’s Envoy-Speech on Peace

Educational Q&A

Even clear, trustworthy counsel fails when pride and attachment dominate. The verse highlights how contempt for wise advice (Vidura) and parental partiality (Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s fondness for his son) can lead a person to choose adharma knowingly, making moral failure a matter of will rather than ignorance.

Sañjaya reports that Duryodhana (Suyodhana) dismisses Vidura’s reliable words as if they were untrustworthy. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, though aware of the moral stakes, sides with what pleases his son and thus deliberately proceeds along the unrighteous course that drives the conflict toward war.
